Try out: workshop Choices
Length: 30 minutes
Location: to be announced
Max participants: 20
Run by: Margit Govers, Head of Communications ASG
This workshop is a try-out for the House of Commons-style debates we will be organizing in the fall of 2024 to further discuss the ASG narrative.
What do the choices made in the ASG narrative and AGS’s strategic plan mean in practice? How do we deal with the dilemmas we encounter in the choices made? Often, these involve questions of ethics and/or the independent position of ASG/WUR. These questions arise not only in projects/assignments but also in, for example, participation in/giving talks at symposia, cooperating with media requests, and hosting delegations.
You are very welcome to take part in this fun debate (max 20 participants). Spectators are welcome as well; you do not need to register as a spectator.

How to tell your story
Length: 60 minutes
Location: Zodiac (building 122), room E0243
Max participants: 23
Run by: Antoinette Thijssen, Head of Marketing & Communications Social Sciences Group (SSG)
Communicating about your research might be more important than ever before. Probably you have a great and important story to tell. Talking about your research (to stakeholder, journalists or the public) can be great fun, but it can also be challenging. How do you translate the often complex context, which is completely clear to you, into understandable language for your audience? Where to start? Which steps to take?
In this workshop Antoinette tells you everything you need to know about how to tell your story. And you are going to practice too. A workshop for everyone who would like to share their research story, but could use some tips and tricks on how to make that work.
How to talk to the press
Length: 60 minutes
Time: 13:30, 14:45 and 16:00
Location: Zodiac (building 122), room E1244
Max participants: 23
Run by: Lenneke Duindam, press officer WUR
WUR promotes an open knowledge society. As scientists, we can contribute to this by feeding the public debate and enriching it with our research results. Or by explaining how science works. Contact with the press is therefore important to take the results of our research into society.
Journalists may contact you for different reasons. Each situation has its own dynamics. Are journalists contacting you in response to your own research results, e.g. in response to a news item on the website? Are they looking for an expert to interpret a current event or development? Are they looking for background information on a topic without publishing it directly?
In this workshop, you will get tips and tricks on how to talk to the press, how to make your own news and how to recognise a story. Our press officer Lenneke Duindam can tell you like no other how you can make a difference.

Workshops 90 minutes
Understanding Polarisation
Length: 90 minutes
Location: Impulse (building 115), room Ncountr
Max participants: 30
Run by:
- Inge Wallage, Corporate Director Communications & Marketing
- Laura Witlox, Communications Advisor AFSG
What is needed to sustain yourself as a scientist or researcher in times of polarization?
Polarization, or "us-versus-them" thinking, intensifies the divisions between population groups or political parties. Examples of scientific topics include the nitrogen debate, the energy transition, the habitat of the wolf, the protein transition: in these discussions, groups of people are often (very) fiercely opposed to each other, and scientific facts matter less and less. How do you recognize polarization and how can you turn it around?
Scientists do not deal in opinions, but they are often pigeonholed as such. WUR helps researchers recognize the dynamics of polarization. What is wise to do when the outside world runs away with your research, when elements are named in an unfounded manner, or are even used for improper purposes?
This workshop will be offered once in English and once in Dutch (see registration form).
