Making sense of self-measurement: psychology and ethics of personal health

The increasing use of wearable devices and health apps for self-tracking reflects a desire for objective insights into personal well-being. While these metrics, encompassing heart rate, sleep, calories, and activity, seem to offer scientific objectivity, they don't convey the entirety of an individual's story. Numbers, often seen as neutral, actually carry implicit judgments, fostering self-objectification. Wijnand IJsselsteijn's talk explores the intricate psychological dynamics of self-measurement in health, emphasizing the importance of embracing the intangible aspects of being human. He advocates for a nuanced perspective, acknowledging that not everything valuable can be quantified, and discusses the ethical considerations surrounding self-measurement practices.
